What is a gear pump?

A gear pump is a device that helps transport liquids by generating pressure through the meshing of gears. The gear pump utilizes two gears that continuously mesh together to create a pressure differential, which facilitates the movement of the liquid.

When the gears rotate, low pressure or a vacuum is created at the inlet, causing liquid to flow into the pump. At the outlet, the meshing of the gears generates high pressure, forcing the liquid out.

A gear pump is also known as a positive displacement pump because the amount of liquid discharged in each cycle is fixed and not affected by changes in system pressure. This ensures a stable flow rate that is proportional to the pump's speed. The flow rate depends on the pump's speed and is generally stable and predictable, allowing for precise flow control.

What are the types of gear pumps?

• External Gear Pump: This type of gear pump typically has a simple and efficient design, where two identical gear wheels mesh together and rotate in opposite directions. These two gears are located within the pump casing, and their centers are on the same axis. A drawback of external gear pumps is that they tend to produce more noise.
• Internal Gear Pump: This pump consists of an internal gear and an external gear, where the internal gear is located inside the external gear, and the centers of the two gears are not on the same axis. Internal gear pumps usually have a crescent-shaped separator to prevent backflow and increase fluid pressure. This design allows for very smooth operation and lower noise levels, though internal gear pumps have a higher likelihood of damage compared to external gear pumps.

What industries use gear pumps?

Gear pumps are commonly used to transport high-viscosity liquids, such as lubricating oil, engine oil, fuel liquids, hydrocarbons, syrup, chocolate, and pulp. Therefore, they are often used in industries such as chemicals, food processing, and papermaking.
